The last few months have been busy. We bought a townhouse in Kirkland and moved. Although nice, it's very small, at just over 1,000 square feet. By Seattle standards, that's not bad. But for an Idaho boy, paying well over a quarter million for that kind of space makes my stomach churn. Such is the housing market here. We've had to get rid of a ton of our possessions, including most of our books, a couple sets of shelves, our desk, clothes, shoes. The commute time has nearly doubled too. This afternoon it took me 90 minutes to get home with bumper-to-bumper traffic most of the way. And we bought closer in than most of the areas in our price range!
Many people might question my sanity in continuing to live here. The reason we stay is family. Whereas my family is spread out all over, Amy's is concentrated in the Seattle eastside. Amy and I both want Sahara to be able to play with cousins and have an intimate sense of belonging to a larger, extended family. The idea of moving out and moving away seems to be the norm in today's society. We're determined to buck this trend and stay close to as much family as possible, even if we have to live like hamsters to do it.
