San Juan Island Getaway

This Friday morning we drove to Anacortes and took a ferry to the San Juan Islands. We spent the night in Friday Harbor, then toured the island on Saturday. The kids enjoyed the hour-long ferry ride that winds between various islands on the way to Friday Harbor. The weather was beautiful and the islands were a terrific change of pace for us.

We checked out Lakedale resort and a few others while there, so that next time we'll have a better idea where we want to go. Saturday morning we drove up to Roche Harbor, which was beautiful and a lot more sleepy and serene than Friday Harbor. It looks like a good place to bring a book and unwind as time slips silently into the background.

From Roche harbor we went to Lime Kiln State Park to look for orcas. No luck there, but we did get some commanding views of the Haro strait between the San Juans and Canada.

My favorite part of the island was the middle. The valleys are filled with fields and well-kept family farms right out of a story book. It reminded me of simpler times growing up in the farm country of Idaho. The farms along with the complete lack of man-made background noise made this trip for me.
