Orcas Island

We spent our three-day Valentine's weekend at Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands, with the kids in tow, of course. We left Saturday morning in the rain and were bracing for a wet weekend. But Saturday afternoon was fairly dry (if overcast) and the other two days the sun came out some of the time.

We stayed at West Beach Resort tucked in an inlet along the northwestern edge of the island. "Resort" is a bit of a misnomer here: The resort consisted of a dozen small cabins along the waterfront. Amenities were basic, but the view was hard to beet (at least once the sun came out and the we could see the sun set).

The kids were very excited to be in this new place, and it was hard to get them to go to bed at night. Once they were down, Gavin fell off our bed (which was about 9 inches from the wall) and banged his head. But he had a blast picking up pebbles from the rocky beach and throwing them into the water. Sahara spent a lot of time collecting shells along the beach--she had three large bags full to bring home.

Lots more pictures coming soon.

Sahara is so pretty in that picture of her in the blue.
